How HEIC to WebP Conversion Works

HEIC and HEIF files cannot simply be renamed with a .webp extension because the underlying image data must be decoded and encoded into the WebP format. This converter first decodes the primary image from the selected HEIC/HEIF file into a browser-compatible image representation. The decoded image is then rendered at its natural pixel dimensions and encoded as WebP using the selected quality setting.

Before a conversion is marked as complete, the generated output is validated as WebP image data. Each successful source image produces its own .webp file.

Technical note: The browser conversion pipeline uses a PNG intermediate after HEIC decoding before the final WebP encoding step. The selected WebP quality setting is applied during the final WebP encoding stage.
